English

Our English classes build on the students’ skills and prepare them for college work. Freshman and sophomore classes enhance vocabulary skills, study grammatical concepts, and practice reading for comprehension and interpretation, both through selected short stories and essays and through a series of outside reading books (eight annually) upon which they are tested. The lower classmen are also expected to master writing at the most basic level: the paragraph.

During their years here, students will read 32 books as “outside reading,” including classic novels, mythology, Shakespearean plays, and popular fiction. We believe that the list of books we have selected comprise the core of any young person’s burgeoning literary and cultural awareness. We are proud of our collection!
