Social Studies

There is tremendous value in the social studies curriculum. The study of the paths taken by our predecessors who created the environments we live in today is invaluable to decision-making when we look at our own experiences. Learning to appreciate the actions and experiences of the many individuals from the past provides the current generations with knowledge applicable to their daily lives. Understanding those actions and experiences promotes a deeper respect for not only the men and women who forged a path but also allows the present to explore the many potential outcomes of the decisions made in today’s environment.

This exploration is the essence of each social studies class offered at our school. By emerging into each of the ‘time-framed’ periods the student can observe how individual actions culminated into a result that has summarily affected so many. It is our general purpose as teachers of social studies to emphasize the importance of one person’s actions as well as the positive and/or negative affect that one person might have not only put upon themselves but on countless others. It is important to learn the past in order not to make the same mistakes. It is also very important that one learns the benefit and reward that often is the result of “good” decision making.

We are excited this year to add a new layer of depth to the social studies curriculum with the addition of Advanced Placement classes.  We hope this addition not only challenges our students who have the aptitude and ability to rise to it, we also hope it deepens their understanding of those who have come before us and the importance of today’s decision making on the future.
