Structured Study Hall

The Structured Study Hall (SSH) Program is designed to assist freshmen who may struggle academically so that they will have the study skills and habits necessary to be successful at CHS and later in life.

– The Entrance Exam and student’s past testing will help us determine which freshmen will need SSH the most.
– Parents should provide copies of any information (psychoeducational testing, etc.) that would help us understand and assist the student in case of particular learning differences.
– Freshmen who apply to the program will be selected for SSH according to academic need.

Classes Offered:

• SSH classes (Original, and with Dyslexia Resources) are part of the school day and replace regular study hall
• Fee per semester: $375 (do not pay until enrollment is confirmed)
• Freshman-only classes 
• Small class sizes (up to 9 students)
• Highly recommended for students who scored below 7.5 grade level on CHS Entrance Exam. Easily recommended for students who scored below 8.4 grade level on CHS Entrance Exam.
• SSH Original and SSH with Dyslexia Resources are not substitutes for tutoring if student needs more intense 1:1 assistance

Structured Study Hall (Original)

Students are trained in organization and active study habits, with guidance provided to assist students in applying the study skills to their coursework. • Skills taught: Organization, Note Taking, Task Management, Active Study Strategies, Subject-specific Strategies, Self-Monitoring, Test and Exam Preparation, Self-Monitoring and Troubleshooting
• Other assistance offered: Subject-specific guidance, outside reading book strategies, proofreading opportunities

Structured Study Hall (with Dyslexia Resources)

Best suited for students with dyslexia or other reading / language difficulties, with priority given to those performing below grade level; especially recommended for those who have never received dyslexia intervention. Contact Mrs. Katie Stehle, our Literacy/Dyslexia Specialist, KStehle@lrchs.org, regarding Dyslexia resources, reading difficulty questions, or screening for suspected dyslexia. Parents: If your son has already been diagnosed, please provide a copy of the evaluation report containing his dyslexia diagnosis to the office marked “Attention: Mrs. Hartnedy”.

• Skills taught: SSH skills listed above in SSH (Original), tailored specifically for students with dyslexia
• Other assistance provided: resources and training for students with dyslexia to access information using technology; training in self-advocacy skills; resources available for parents, especially those unfamiliar with dyslexia
• Reading Remediation Tutoring may become available, pending Title I funding and tutor availability. Specific information will be announced during the school year as it unfolds.
• Referrals to certified dyslexia interventionists are available if needed. It will be the responsibility of the parent/guardian to contact a tutor to make arrangements for off-campus intervention outside of school hours, as well as arrange for private payment.
